Giant Store Nakumatt has shut down its Prestige mall outlet over unknown reasons.
This move has paved the way to the rival supermarket, Naivas, which is expanding its territories in the county and outside Nairobi.
But what happened to Nakumatt the once vibrant and authoritative supermarket with branches all over the country?
Naivas on the other side took over Moi Avenue space where Nakumatt had its outlet now amounting to 58 branches countrywide.
Nakumatt’s fall off started in 2017 after its outlets in Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania were kicked out for failing to pay rent rendering its employees jobless.
In Kenya, the same happened and are now left with only three stores in Nairobi and Nakuru in Mombasa Road, Parklands and Westmall respectively.
The fall of Nakumatt dates to arrears as indicated in court files where the business owed suppliers and produces up to 40 billion.
While Naivas continues shining, Quickmart and Tumaini are big stores to watch as they spread wings to reach more customers.
Quickmart has a new store in the busy Waiyaki Way and another one underway in Ongata Rongai and a possible merger with Tumaini.
